1. Clinical competence and formal clinical training

DETAILS FOR SPECIALIST COMPETENCE IN NEUROLOGY

According to the regulations of the Swedish Board of Health & Welfare (SoSFS 1985:1), the requirements for obtaining the degree of specialist competence in Neurology are defined as to be the following:

  1. Main Clinical Training: 3 years serving within a recognized department of Neurology
  2. Subsidiary Clinical Training.
    1. 6 months serving within a recognized department of Internal Medicine
    2. 6 months serving within a recognized department of Psychiatry
  3. Systematic Theoretical Education: a total of 6 NLV-courses (Courses of the Committee of the Postgraduate Medical Education) are to be chosen from within the subjects of the required specialty attended and be recognized

I have for 5½ year (from 1 September 1989) followed the described training programme. Thereby, I have fulfilled the necessary requirements to obtain the degree of Specialist in Neurology.

Clinical Neurology

3 years
General Medicine 2½ years + (½ year from the Clinical Neurology Period)*, as follows:
Internal Medicine (+Gastroenterology) 6 months

Endocrinology 3 months

Experience of on-call services: 25 years of standby duty

Special clinical competence/profile area: General Neurology and Neuroimmunology Activities and experience

  1. Daily conferences between 8:00 – 8:30 a.m. to present and discuss complicated neurological cases admitted to the department during the last 24h
  2. Rounds and all responsibilities related to in-patient care in the ward of clinical neurology
  3. Consultations and patient care at the outpatient facilities of the Department
  4. 24h of duty to take care of neurological emergency cases around the clock
  5. Participation at the unit of neuromuscular diseases including evaluation of patients for neuromuscular diseases, biopsies of muscle, skin and peripheral nerve, morphometry of muscle fibers, immunohistochemistry and histology
  6. Doppler ultrasound evaluation of cerebrovascular diseases at the laboratory for ultrasound of the Department
  7. Evaluation of complicated pain patients at the pain clinic of the department
  8. Evaluation of oligoclonal bands in gel electrophoresis and isoelectrical focusing at the routine lab of the Department

Examination Passed an oral extensive examination held by Professor Hans Link, Senior Physician and Chairman of the Department of neurology on July 2, 1993. This examination included all parts, which are necessary for Swedish Neurology Residents when they obtain their specialization.

* Acting Head Department of Infectious Diseases, Karolinska Institute – Huddinge University Hospital: June – August 1999.

* Medical Director of Al-Shaab Teaching Hospital: August 1987 – July 1988.

* President of the High Committee of Development of Al-Shaab Teaching Hospital – Khartoum: 1987-1988.

* TV introduced for public Medical Information, Scientific and Cultural programs from 1985-1988.
